Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug
Are you a home cook who enjoys the flexibility of gas cooktops but needs an oven for baking? Find a dual fuel cooker that gives you the best of both worlds.
Many experienced home chefs favor gas cooktops for their superior temperature control and capacity to utilize advanced cooking techniques such as grilling. These powerful stoves are expensive, especially if they require an additional gas connection and an electrician for installation.
What is a 13amp plug?
If you have a dual fuel range cooker (also known as a gas and an electric oven) you'll require an electrical outlet of 13 amps. The plug will also have to be wired in the cooker circuit ring by a qualified electrician.
This assures that the current that flows through the plug is secure and not excessive, which could create an electrical fire risk. The current is controlled by a fuse within the plug. The fuse will blow when it is overloaded. This protects the appliance against an overload of electricity.
The fuse is rated at 13 amps, which is shown on top of the plug. This indicates the maximum amount of current the plug could carry without damaging the appliance or heating the socket. It is important that when replacing fuses you always use the same amperage as the original. You run the risk of overheating a socket if you replace a fuse with an unrelated rating.
Ceramic 13 amp fuses are very durable, and can withstand high temperatures that can be generated by the range cooker. Ceramic elements are also resistant to fire and therefore a better choice over other types.
There are a few different ways that a 13 amp plug can be connected. It can be connected to an existing live socket. the flex then connected to it using a screw or plastic jaw-type cord clamp. The cord clamp should be tightened after the plug has been securely pushed into position.
Some plugs include a wiring diagram on cardboard over the pins and these should be removed prior to connecting the wires. The wires should be cut to the proper length, as if they are too long, they can get crushed when the plug covers are replaced. The earth wire must be the longest to connect it before the neutral and line pins.
How do I connect the 13amp plug?
The vast majority dual fuel range cookers in UK are powered by a 13 amp plug. This is important because ovens draw a significant current, and standard plug sockets only have a 10-amp rating.
In general new appliances must include a plug at the point of sale. This is to ensure compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. However, older appliances may not be connected to a plug and this is where the problem arises.
The first step to take when connecting a cooker to an existing plug socket is to check that the fuse rating in the fuse box matches that of the plug. This is important because a faulty fuse could be dangerous.
It is also advisable to make sure that the fuse is set within the cartridge and that there is no excessive movement within it. The next step is to prepare the flex that will be used. Remove the sheathing from the flex, exposing the three conductors that are insulated within. Next nick the sheathing at the point of entry to the plug (beyond the cord grip) using a knife, but without damaging the individual insulated conductors. The nick should be large enough that the sheathing can split and expand the nick when it is pulled back revealing the cable beneath. Cut off the excess sheathing leaving about 40mm beyond the flex.
The flex should be positioned over the plug, with the earth terminal on top and the neutral and live terminals on the bottom. The sheathing of each pin is removed using the conductors in the colour of the wire as a guide. The internal cable is then inserted into the terminal using the cord grip. If the plug has an screw-type clamp for cords loosen it, and then pull back the insulation to expose the copper conductors. Connect each wire that is insulated to the appropriate terminal by using the channel in the plug. Start with the earth conductor, then the neutral, and finally, the live.
What is the maximum draw of a 13 amp plug?
The maximum current draw for 13amp plugs at 230volts is 3kw. This is a lot of power, but the standard fuse in a UK plug won't fail until the cable reaches a hazardous temperature. It is crucial to be aware of the amount of power you're using in your kitchen, since an unfit plug or socket can cause a fire.
The fuses in plugtops are ceramic, approximately 25mm in length and rated 240V mains. The fuses are marked with the BS Kitemark or similar mark on their side, and they will contain sand. There are also cheaper glass or plastic alternatives, but they should never be used with a live plug, unless you want to blow the fuse and potentially get electrocuted!
In the UK the majority of dual fuel range cookers are wired. They cannot be plugged directly into the wall outlet. They are usually connected using a separate cooker circuit that is only suitable for appliances with a maximum of 20 amps.
Examine the ring circuit in your home by using the fuse box, or call an electrician nearby. dual-fuel range style cookers can ask them if the sockets are on the same ring, or if they are distinct. They will also be able to tell you if there is a dedicated circuit to power your oven.

What is the most draw for a switch for a cooker?
There is a lot of confusion regarding the maximum current draw for the cooker switch. The truth is that most cookers are not designed to connect to a standard socket, but instead are wired hard and fed into an oven ring circuit. This is due to the fact that they usually consume more than 20 amps when the electric hob and gas oven are being used.
Therefore, you cannot find a dual fuel range cooker that can be connected to a standard socket as this could create a serious fire risk and would be in violation of electrical regulations. A professional electrician should always install new electrics in the kitchen, connecting them to the cooker. They will also make sure that the load of the oven and the hob does not exceed the circuit's supply capacity.
Dual fuel range cookers combine the responsiveness of a gas stove and the precision and accuracy of an electric oven. They are therefore popular with both chefs and home cooks. If dual range cooker looking to test different cooking techniques such as searing and grilling, a dual-fuel range cooker is the best choice.
